Keeping Yoga Real

In this vast world of social media my intention is to be real. Hey! This is the real me kind of thing. I don’t worry much about what others think of me. That is not to say that I never have. I am just done making that a priority in my life. I am living my life the way I want and if people don’t like it well they don’t have to follow my journey.

I have been clearing my life of the things that don’t serve me. Such as physical possessions, people who drag me down, doubt within myself, negative energy, self judgement, and unhealthy food (ok sometimes I eat cake). I am working on forgiving myself for my imperfections and embracing them.

When I get on my mat I set my intention to be real. I don’t wish to be what I am not. Of course I am always working to improve. However, if I don’t go as far as I want or hold a pose as long as I want I try not to beat myself up. As a good friend of mine said recently “Smiling always helps”. Don’t be so serious.

I show you the real me. I am not a picture perfect yogi. My skin is not tan, my belly is not flat, I don’t have the best yoga clothes, and not all of my yoga poses are picture perfect. I make no apologies, because this is me and I love who I am. I own who I am.

I want to inspire others to own who they are, as they are, with no guilt. Come to your mat as you. Don’t worry about bending as far as that really flexible girl next to you in class. Maybe you are already really bendy and want to be more strong. That girl or guy at the gym with the really nice abs and arms makes you feel inadequate. Stop that!!! Be you!!! You are a beautiful creature on this earth. “EveryBODY is different,” as my yoga mentor Shannon would say. Don’t compare your yoga to others. Your yoga is not like my yoga.

This is not to say you should never try to improve or grow. I am only saying that you should not be so hard on yourself. Be more gentle and loving to yourself. Practice self love. This is one of the hardest things to do because we are our own worst critics. When I practiced yoga on the beach and my husband took pictures I felt alive and wonderful. Then I looked at the pictures and was like “omg, I am so white,” “you can see my little belly pooch”. Then I reminded myself that I want to be real and this is my yoga in its truest and realest form.

Be real! Be real with yourself, with your loved ones, and with everyone. You will be happier that way I promise. Sure you might encounter judgement from others. So what? When you show your real self you may even find your tribe (a group of people  that you can have a feeling of belonging with).

Post that picture of that pose you really like that you just tried… even if you are in a stained t-shirt. So what if your skin is white as a ghost. If you want to do yoga naked or just in your underwear, do it! Keep your yoga real, listen to your body.

Be real now, as you are. A lot of people get hung up on the whole “I’ll love myself when I lose 15 lbs, have more time, find the right guy/girl, when I get promoted, when I’m better at it.” There is no time to waste on that way of thinking. Love yourself!!! Then showing your real self will just get a little easier and easier everyday.
